INNOVATION OF ISLAMIC LEARNING MEDIA WITH VIRTUAL REALITY TECHNOLOGY

Abstract


This research is motivated by the limited exploration of the use of immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) in the context of Islamic Religious Education (PAI), despite its significant potential in shaping the understanding of religious values in the digital era. The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions, experiences, and impacts of the use of VR media in PAI learning on student engagement and understanding of abstract religious concepts, while also identifying factors that support and hinder its implementation. This study used a qualitative method with a single embedded case study design, involving 20 participants consisting of 15 students, 4 PAI teachers, and 1 principal from a private high school in Indonesia selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations of VR learning sessions, and analysis of documents such as lesson plans and student reflective journals. Data analysis was conducted using a thematic approach. The results showed that the use of VR significantly increased students' emotional, cognitive, and behavioral engagement. Abstract concepts such as the Hajj rituals or Islamic history can be understood more concretely through direct experience. This research supports the constructivist and experiential learning approaches, which emphasize the role of experience in building knowledge. The main conclusion states that VR is a transformative medium that creates a sense of presence, but its success depends on infrastructure, teacher competence, and appropriate content.
