LEADERSHIP STRATEGIES OF MADRASAH PRINCIPALS IN IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION IN NGANJUK REGENCY

Abstract


This research is motivated by the lack of studies on contextual leadership strategies of madrasah principals at the district level, despite their significant influence on the quality of graduates in the global era. The objective of this research is to analyze in-depth the leadership strategies of madrasah principals in improving the quality of Islamic education in Nganjuk Regency. The research used a qualitative approach with a multi-site case study design, involving three madrasahs (Aliyah, Tsanawiyah, and Ibtidaiyah) selected purposively based on their reputation and development. Informants consisted of madrasah principals, deputy heads of curriculum, senior teachers, and madrasah supervisors from the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document reviews such as Madrasah Work Plans and curricula. Data analysis was conducted thematically. The results indicate that effective leadership strategies are a combination of transformational, instructional, and spiritual styles. The five main strategies identified were: (1) formulating a vision for a superior and Islamic madrasah, (2) continuously improving teacher competency, (3) developing a contextual curriculum, (4) establishing a religious and high-achieving madrasah culture, and (5) strengthening partnerships with parents and the community. In conclusion, visionary and spiritual madrasah leadership plays a crucial role in improving the quality of education. This research has theoretical and practical implications and opens up opportunities for further study regarding the long-term impact on student achievement.
